Warning Light Products for Section 32 1729 - Crosswalk Warning Lights and Signs

Light Guard Systems, Inc. invented in-roadway warning lights, had them extensively tested, and obtained approval of the concept by the Federal Highway Administration and the California Department of Transportation. The FHWA's Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, adopted by all State highway departments, has included provisions for in-roadway warning lights since 2000.

The flashing LED lights are visible to motorists from over 400 feet away and are activated either automatically by a pedestrian entering the crosswalk or manually by the pedestrian. The lights are not visible to the pedestrian, to avoid generating a false sense of security in the pedestrian's mind. The duration of flashing is factory-preset but the microprocessor-based control panel allows field adjustment. The embedded components come in two types -- standard and "snow plow resistant". The automatic actuators are pairs of bollard-mounted infrared sensors, with an optional embedded sensor that can be used in conjunction with one bollard where the second bollard might be subject to traffic damage. The manual actuators are pushbuttons like those used for standard pedestrian crossings.

Light Guard also makes crosswalk signs that are enhanced with LEDs that flash in sync with the roadway lights. Crosswalk warning lights of this type may be used at any crosswalk that is not otherwise controlled by a Yield sign, a Stop sign, or traffic lights. The principal use is for mid-block crosswalks, where vehicles are supposed to stop for a pedestrian in the crosswalk, such as at schools, public buildings, malls, multi-building campuses like universities and hospitals, and golf cart crossings. Light Guard Systems also makes similar systems for warning at railroad grade crossings and industrial traffic crossings. The warning lights may be used to enhance traffic signals, in which case they are activated in sync with the traffic light. The flashing-LED-enhanced signs can be used for fire station entrances, dangerous curves, and to highlight Stop signs.
